Welcome to this week’s edition of Mondays with Mark. Here’s what’s new this week…
1. Article I can’t stop thinking about 🥤
We know so little about how food affects us—especially all of the “frankenfood” in the Western Diet that is engineered to make us crave it.
In my book, I discuss how poor sleep breathing at night makes us crave processed foods.
What this article taught me: it’s not the taste you become addicted to; it’s the energy. The sleep-deprived brain becomes addicted to the dopamine from the energy boost. And there’s a huge cost, with a big crash at the end, making you crave more, destabilizing sugar levels, and kicking off the cycle again.

2. Watch last week’s Invisalign Q&A 🦷
You can watch last week’s Q&A, or any of my past Q&As, by going to @askthedentist on Instagram, and they’re all saved in Highlights.
Got pediatric dental health questions? My friend and functional pediatric dentist, Dr. Staci, is doing a Q&A takeover this Friday. Don’t miss it!
3. On the podcast: The Oral Microbiome 🎙
On this week’s episode of Ask the Dentist, I answer a question from Lisa, who asks, “What can I do to optimize my oral microbiome?”
In this episode, we get into the habits revolving around diet, brushing, flossing, mouth taping, and the harmful effects of modern toothpaste.
When you have a moment, please subscribe, rate, and review the podcast! Each review helps get the word out about functional dentistry.
Thanks for reading and have a great week.
P.S. If you have kids, I can’t recommend this chewable probiotic highly enough. It contains targeted strains to help support oral bacterial diversity. Forward this email and share it with the parents in your life!
