I hope this newsletter finds each of you in good health. Here’s the latest from me and from the world of functional dentistry:
1. Kudos to UCSF for integrating records across medical and dental to give a clearer picture of the oral-systemic connection (Read the announcement here.)
I was elated to read this news! This is a tipping point in the field of dentistry and patient health. This integration of dental and medical records will give doctors and dentists a more complete picture of the oral-systemic connection at play, providing new opportunities to coordinate care. This move will also lead to cost savings not only due to increased efficiency, but also by giving clinicians a clearer path to the root cause!
2. Brand new study shows hydroxyapatite toothpaste wins over fluoride toothpaste (Read the study here.)
Fluoride might not be on its way out because of its toxicity, it might now be on its way out because it’s less effective! This study found that a toothpaste made with 20% hydroxyapatite was better at remineralizing than a regular fluoride toothpaste at 1450 ppm. It also showed that pre-treating the tooth surface with an acid-etchant before using the toothpaste improved the remineralization effect.
